The countdown is on inside Queen Mary Public School, where students are putting the finishing touches on this year’s spring musical.
Rock of Ages: Youth Edition is set to hit the stage April 27th through May 1st at the Monaghan Road school, with five early evening performances planned. Admission is by donation, with proceeds supporting the school’s nutrition program.
Behind the scenes, rehearsals have been in full swing for weeks. Special education resource teacher Teresa Laton is one of three staff members helping guide about 80 students from kindergarten through Grade 8 through the production. She says the annual musical gives students a chance to explore their creative side and be part of something bigger.
Among those taking centre stage is Caitlyn Boothroyd, who steps into the lead role of Sherrie, one of the show’s main characters.
Savannah Walpole is pulling double duty, balancing time on stage as a performer while also contributing to the ensemble.
Also part of the cast is Lexi Coppaway, an ensemble member getting ready for her first time under the stage lights as opening night approaches.
