The City of Peterborough is opening sandbag filling stations to help residents protect their properties as water levels continue to rise along the Trent-Severn Waterway.
Stations will operate from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday at Graham Avenue and Lillian Street, and Riverside Drive and Steele Avenue. Sand and bags will be provided, with Public Works staff on site to assist.
Officials say rising water levels are being driven by ongoing rainfall and snowmelt from northern parts of the watershed, increasing flows along the Otonabee River and raising the risk of localized flooding in low-lying areas.
Residents are responsible for placing sandbags on their properties, with the city recommending they be used around basement window wells and doors.
Authorities are also warning that shorelines and riverbanks may be unstable due to fast-moving water. Residents are urged to use caution, supervise children closely and keep pets leashed.
