Peterborough Police are warning the public after an 83-year-old resident lost more than $5,000 in a grandparent scam.
Police say the victim received calls on April 7 and 8 from someone posing as a police officer claiming a family member was in trouble.
The victim was then pressured into paying money, which was collected from their home on both days by a man.
The suspect is described as a white male, 5’10, late 20s to early 30s, medium build, with short dark hair, clean shaven, wearing an overcoat and a purple and grey scarf.
Police are reminding residents that law enforcement will never ask for money and are urging people to be cautious of unsolicited calls or messages involving urgent financial requests.
Anyone who believes they may be targeted is encouraged to contact their local police service or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
