Trustees with the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board are continuing work on the 2026-27 budget, with early projections pointing to a slight decline in student enrolment.
Meeting as a budget committee, trustees reviewed planning updates, including enrolment forecasts that directly impact provincial funding.
Board chair Paul Brown said officials are working to balance fiscal responsibility with student needs.
“We take very seriously our obligation to be responsible stewards of public funds,” Brown said, adding that supporting classroom learning remains the top priority.
Total enrolment is projected at 34,946 students, including a drop of 303 elementary students and 136 secondary students compared to the previous year.
School board revenues are tied to enrolment levels, prompting staff to review spending and identify efficiencies across operations.
Brown said the board will continue directing resources “where they are needed most,” particularly in support of students and staff.
Further budget discussions are scheduled through late April and May as trustees work toward a balanced plan.
