As warmer weather approaches, the City of Kawartha Lakes Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding residents of the rules and responsibilities for dirt bike and ATV use. While activity has started to increase in some communities, the reminder is being shared early to encourage safe and responsible riding.
Trail restrictions: All municipal trails remain closed until May 1. Operating off-road vehicles on closed trails is prohibited and may result in fines.
The OPP have also noted increased off-road activity in Pontypool, Bethany, and Janetville. Dirt bikes and ATVs are not allowed on public roads unless the road has been officially designated for off-road vehicle use. Under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act (HTA) O. Reg. 316/03, operating an off-road vehicle on a roadway without authorization is illegal.
Minimum age requirements:
- On roads (where permitted): 16 years old, with a valid G2, M2, or higher licence.
- Off-road (not on roads): 12 years old, unless directly supervised by an adult.
All riders must also have:
- Valid insurance and registration
- A properly fitted helmet
- Required safety equipment
- Compliance with municipal bylaws and provincial regulations
The OPP will continue to monitor off-road activity and support patrols in areas with increased use. Residents who witness unsafe or illegal riding are encouraged to report incidents directly to the OPP.
The City of Kawartha Lakes OPP thanks the public for their cooperation in promoting safe and responsible off-road vehicle use throughout the municipality.
