The city is moving forward with amendments to its Airport Zoning Regulations to support the long-term operation of the Peterborough Regional Airport.
Councillors authorized the Commissioner of Municipal Operations to begin the federally regulated process, which is overseen by Transport Canada under the Aeronautics Act.
Officials say the changes are needed to ensure the airspace surrounding the airport remains clear of obstacles that could pose safety risks to aircraft.
The current zoning regulations, enacted in 1994, are based on a 5,000-foot primary runway and do not reflect the airport’s current or future configuration.
Proposed updates would expand protections to cover the full 7,000-foot primary runway, as well as the secondary crosswind runway, while supporting potential future upgrades to navigation systems.
The amendment process is expected to take several years and requires a formal agreement to begin.
City staff say the changes are essential to maintaining safe operations and supporting the airport’s long-term viability and growth.
