Peterborough-Kawartha NDP Riding Association Morgan Carl is “thrilled” that Avi Lewis has been chosen as the party’s new federal leader, noting most local association members feel the same way.
On Sunday (March 29th) at the party’s convention in Winnipeg, Lewis captured 56 percent of the vote on the first ballot to get the nod over four other candidates. In a clear display of party unity, all five candidates gathered on stage to celebrate Lewis’ victory.
Carl notes Lewis addressed a capacity crowd at the Lions’ Community Centre just a few weeks ago and creating a buzz in the process.
While many party faithful have expressed the hope that Lewis will spark a comeback for the federal NDP, Carl says that comeback started well before Sunday’s leadership vote and the momentum continues to pick up.
Lewis has indicated he’s not in a hurry to secure a seat in the House of Commons. While Carl thinks there are “certain benefits” to being a sitting member, she says there is a silver lining in his not being tied down to Ottawa.
