Clearing the end of the driveway after a snowstorm can be one of winter’s toughest tasks, and the City of Peterborough is now looking at ways to help.
Following a Council motion, the City is exploring a pilot windrow removal program aimed at reducing the snow ridges left behind by plows at the end of driveways. Those ridges, known as windrows, can be especially difficult to manage for older adults and people with disabilities.
The proposed program would focus specifically on clearing the windrow portion after plows have passed, rather than full driveway snow removal. It’s intended to improve safety and accessibility for residents who may not have reliable help during the winter months.
City staff say the pilot would be limited in size and include a fee to help offset costs. Eligibility is expected to focus on seniors and people with disabilities, though final details have not yet been determined.
Before moving forward, the City is asking residents to weigh in through a short survey. Feedback will help shape key elements of the pilot, including who qualifies, how the service would operate, and what level of cost would be considered reasonable.
If approved, registration for the pilot could open in fall 2026, with the program running through the winter season. Results would then be reviewed and shared publicly, with a report to Council expected in spring 2027.
Residents can complete the survey online, which takes about five minutes, to help guide the future of the program.
