It’s a chance to recognize the people who keep the city moving.
March 18 marks Transit Operator and Worker Appreciation Day, highlighting the work of staff at Peterborough Transit who help connect the community every day.
The transit system provides service across the city, including accessible options, helping residents get to work, school, appointments and activities. Beyond operators, the system relies on maintenance technicians, dispatchers, and administrative staff to keep buses running safely and on schedule.
The day was established in 2009 by the American Public Transportation Association and is observed across North America. March 18 reflects the launch of one of the earliest modern public transit systems in Paris in 1662.
Jeff Leal said the day is an opportunity to thank transit workers for the role they play in daily life across the community. Members of council’s municipal operations committee echoed that message, pointing to the teamwork required to deliver reliable and accessible service.
The recognition follows a strong year for the system. In December 2025, the Canadian Urban Transit Association named Peterborough Transit the top system in Canada for ridership among cities with populations under 100,000, with more than 3.7 million rides recorded.
Residents can recognize operators for exceptional service through an online appreciation form, while the transit system continues to recruit additional bus drivers.
