A visitor to Warkworth Institution is facing charges after a correctional officer was injured during an incident earlier this year.
The Ontario Provincial Police say the incident happened on January 30, 2026, when a visitor refused to leave the facility and kicked a door, striking and injuring a correctional officer. The staff member was taken to hospital with non-serious injuries.
Following an investigation by the Northumberland OPP Crime Unit, an arrest was made on March 16.
Maryan Mahamed, 32, of Scarborough, has been charged with:
-
Assault a peace officer with a weapon
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg in April 2026.
Police say they continue to work with Correctional Service Canada to maintain safety in correctional institutions and surrounding communities, including investigating incidents and preventing contraband activity.
