A recent snowmobile accident is highlighting the life-saving potential of the free app what3words.
On February 25, Peterborough County OPP responded to a call where a snowmobile and its passenger lost control and hit a tree. Both were injured but could not describe their location, making it take over 30 minutes for responders to find them.
Since December 2020, OPP Provincial Communications Centres have used what3words to locate people in emergencies. The app divides the world into three-metre squares, each assigned a unique three-word address that can be converted into GPS coordinates for dispatch.
Emergency services stress that precise location information can save precious time and potentially lives. What3words works online or offline and is useful for trails, water, or remote areas.
