Peterborough & the Kawarthas have been named one of the top 10 places to retire in Canada for 2026, according to a recent analysis of affordability, health care, safety, and quality of life.
The study, published by Zolo, evaluated 38 cities and regions using factors such as home prices, access to a primary care provider, crime rates, walkability, and climate. Peterborough ranked ninth overall, with a benchmark home price of $565,900, 25.7 per cent of its population aged 65 or older, and 89.7 per cent of residents having access to a regular health-care provider.
Experts note that smaller Ontario cities like Peterborough appeal to retirees seeking a more relaxed lifestyle, strong health-care access, and safe, walkable communities, while still offering amenities for seniors and families alike.
With 301 sunny days, moderate winter conditions, and a variety of cultural and recreational opportunities, Peterborough’s inclusion in the top 10 highlights its growing reputation as an attractive destination for Canadians planning their retirement years.
Looking at the rest of the list, Cobourg placed seventh, while New Brunswick claimed all three top spots with Saint John, Moncton and Fredericton coming in first, second and third.
