The City of Peterborough is preparing to expand its Green Bin program to a select number of restaurants and other food-generating businesses as part of the next phase of its organic waste diversion efforts.
City officials say the pilot project will include approximately 25 voluntary participants, primarily restaurants located in the downtown core and surrounding areas, including within the Downtown Business Improvement Area. The targeted rollout is designed to help refine collection methods, address logistical considerations and optimize service routes before a broader commercial expansion.
Businesses interested in participating can apply online at peterborough.ca/GreenBin until March 6th. Those not selected for the initial phase will be considered as the program expands city-wide.
The City’s Green Bin program launched on Oct. 31st, 2023, serving about 28,000 households. Officials say the residential service has significantly increased waste diversion from landfill and reduced environmental impacts.
Participating businesses will be able to reduce garbage volumes, keep food waste out of landfill, cut greenhouse gas emissions and turn food scraps into compost and other valuable resources.
City officials say the start-up phase will help shape a future city-wide commercial organics program while giving early participants access to the service and an opportunity to demonstrate environmental leadership.
