As the Olympics begin to wrap up, many children are feeling inspired to try new sports after watching elite athletes compete on the world stage. While that excitement can be a positive motivator, parents are being reminded to keep expectations realistic and focus on enjoyment over performance.
Dr. Christine Korol, a registered psychologist with more than 20 years of experience, says early sport participation should be about exploration, not pressure.
Korol notes that not every child wants, or needs, to pursue elite competition.
For children, it’s important to focus on having fun through sport, while building friendships and a sense of community. She also encourages parents to praise effort and enjoyment rather than results. “Notice their joy, not their performance,” Korol said, adding that the car ride home can be a great time to reflect together.
Simple phrases like “You looked happy out there,” or “You did really well trying something new today,” are good examples of this.
Korol adds that keeping sports fun helps children stay active, confident, and connected long after the Olympic excitement fades.
