Peterborough County is marking Canada’s Agriculture Day on February 10, celebrating a decade of national recognition for the role of agriculture in building strong, healthy communities.
The day highlights the contributions of local food producers, processors, and agriculture-related businesses, and encourages Canadians to engage in conversations about food, farming, and the future of the sector.
Agriculture remains a cornerstone of Peterborough County’s economy and heritage, with a commitment to supporting local producers despite changing economic conditions and global market uncertainty.
“Our farms and food producers are the heart of our community and a source of immense pride for Peterborough County. As we mark the 10th anniversary of Canada’s Agriculture Day, we honour the people, families, and businesses who feed our region and contribute so much to our local economy. Our commitment is unwavering: we will continue to support a strong, resilient agricultural sector for generations to come,” said Peterborough County Warden Bonnie Clark.
Local agriculture is supported through the County’s G.R.O.W. economic development plan, which focuses on Growth, Resiliency, Opportunity, and Workforce. Programs include:
-
Kawartha Local Food Wholesale Project – Connecting producers and commercial buyers through the Green Circle Food Hub to increase local food use in restaurants, retailers, and institutions.
-
Kawartha Choice Farm Fresh – A marketing brand supporting farm-gate sales, farmers’ markets, and consumer recognition of locally grown products.
-
On-Farm Diversified Use Program – Helping smaller farms add tourism or complementary commercial activities, promoting sustainable growth and celebrating the region’s local food culture.
Peterborough County says these initiatives help strengthen and diversify the agri-food sector while highlighting the importance of local farmers to the region’s economy and identity.
