Friends, family, and those who knew Kaitlin “Newt” Newton, 37, are remembering her courage, loyalty, and the joy she brought to everyone around her. In her final moments on Sunday, January 25, she ensured her two young daughters, Quinn and Maci, were safe during a sudden medical emergency.
A GoFundMe page has been created to support the girls, helping cover both immediate and ongoing needs and provide stability after the loss of their mother.
The page says Kaitlin, who is from Port Hope, was driving her daughters, an 8-year-old and a 6-month-old, when she realized something was terribly wrong. In her final moments, she steered her pickup truck safely to the side of the road, bringing it to rest in a ditch. There was no collision, no airbag deployment, and most importantly, her daughters were unharmed. Neighbours who saw the truck stop called 911 immediately. Tragically, Kaitlin did not survive, but her quick thinking and protective instincts kept her daughters safe.
“She protected her girls to the very end,” the page states, describing the act as one of extraordinary love. The page adds that this final act was “pure Kaitlin,” reflecting the strength, care, and presence of mind she brought to every part of her life.
Kaitlin is remembered as a fearless and fiercely loyal friend, a two-time provincial girls AA hockey champion, an accomplished women’s rugby player and coach, and a Trent University graduate. According to the GoFundMe page, she brought energy, talent, and joy to every team she joined, and her infectious laugh left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. She raised her 8-year-old to be capable, caring, and resilient, qualities she exemplified in her own life.
The fundraising page goes on to say that Kaitlin’s daughters now face the unimaginable reality of losing their mother, adding that donations will help cover travel, counselling, and coordination of care across households. The support will provide stability, emotional resources, and help the sisters spend meaningful time together.
“Every contribution, big or small, helps create stability, consistency, and support for Kaitlin’s two girls,” the page says.
Details of a celebration of life will be shared when the family is ready.
The GoFundMe page has already raised over $12,000.
