The City of Peterborough will host a virtual Public Information Centre on Wednesday, February 4, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to review its Stormwater Management Fee. Registration is required at connectptbo.ca/stormwater-funding-review. Once registered, participants will receive a link to join the meeting.
This session is the first of two public meetings on the City’s stormwater fee structure. An in-person session will be held in the spring.
In 2025, the City moved from funding stormwater services through the general tax levy to a dedicated fee on water bills for residential and business customers. The interim fee, based on assessed property value, provides a more predictable funding source while a study is conducted to refine the fee.
The interim fee does not fully meet the long-term financial needs of the stormwater system or public expectations for fairness and transparency. The ongoing Stormwater Rate Study aims to adjust the fee so it better reflects a property’s stormwater impact, improves equity, and supports sustainable planning.
Proposed models include:
-
Same fee for every residence: All residences pay the same fee based on the average impervious area of residential properties.
-
Residential fee by housing type: Different rates for detached houses, townhouses, semi-detached homes, and condos based on average impervious area.
-
Residential fee by housing size and type: Different rates by housing type, with tiers for single-detached homes (small, medium, large).
Residents can learn more and provide feedback through an online survey open until February 13.
