The 2026 Ontario University Athletics women’s fencing championships will be held in Peterborough this weekend, with Trent University hosting the provincial event at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
The championships run January 24th and 25th and will bring together 13 university teams from across Ontario, including Trent’s Excalibur women’s fencing team. More than 150 student-athletes, coaches and officials are expected to compete over two days of individual and team relay events, alongside visiting families and spectators.
City councillor Lesley Parnell said the event highlights Peterborough’s strong relationship with its post-secondary institutions and its ability to host high-level sport competitions, while also showcasing local facilities and hospitality.
Trent’s women’s fencing program operates as an OUA varsity club, offering training and competition in foil, epee and sabre, and attracting athletes of varying experience levels.
Trent Athletics and Recreation director Nathan McFadden said hosting the championship allows Excalibur fencers to compete at home and reflects collaboration between the university and community partners.
The tournament is also being touted as a sport tourism boost, with Peterborough Tourism noting the economic benefits tied to facility use, overnight stays and increased regional exposure.
