Peterborough will receive $75,000 from Ontario Power Generation in 2026 to support its role as a designated Nuclear Host Community, a significant increase from $25,500 under the previous five-year agreement. The new funding arrangement runs from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2030, with annual adjustments for inflation.
The City has held Nuclear Host Community status since 1997 under the Provincial Nuclear Emergency Response Plan. The agreement ensures Peterborough can maintain emergency preparedness, including training and planning for radiation awareness, vehicle decontamination, and nuclear reception centre operations.
City responsibilities under the agreement include:
-
Annual training for Fire Services suppression staff and Emergency Support Services staff and partners
-
Regular updates to the City’s Nuclear Emergency Response Plan
-
Inventories of Nuclear Reception Centre supplies
-
On-site reviews at Fleming College and planning for vulnerable populations
-
Participation in provincial committees, including the Provincial Nuclear Emergency Management Coordinating Committee and the Potassium Iodide Working Group
-
Planning and conducting a Nuclear Reception Centre exercise in line with the Provincial Nuclear Exercise Schedule
The funding helps cover costs associated with Peterborough’s legislated role as a Nuclear Host Community, ensuring the City remains ready to coordinate with provincial emergency measures.
