Peterborough city councillors have approved a recommendation from the Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee to designate 227-233 Hunter Street West, home of the historic Albion Hotel, as a heritage property under the Ontario Heritage Act.
Staff say the Albion Hotel is valued for its cultural heritage and prominence on the edge of the downtown core and is a rare example of Second Empire architecture in the city, the building retains its distinctive mansard roof, a feature popular during the Victorian era. The property is also notable as an example of row housing.
Historically, the building reflects the lives of working-class residents, including merchant and town assessor Cornelius McGrath, grocer Wellington Bradshaw, and plumber C.A. Joseph Duranceau.
Officials add its location along a key downtown axis makes it an important landmark, preserving the character and history of Peterborough’s urban core.
