The Peterborough Petes have unveiled details for the 17th annual Pink in the Rink campaign, continuing what has become the Ontario Hockey League’s largest ongoing fundraiser.
The team announced at a press conference Tuesday that this year’s Pink in the Rink game will take place Saturday, February 7th, when the Petes host the Sudbury Wolves at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
Over the past 16 years, the campaign has raised more than $1 million for cancer research and support initiatives. This season, funds raised will benefit Survivors Abreast, a Peterborough-area group of breast cancer survivors that promotes fitness, support and awareness.
Survivors Abreast is also known for hosting Peterborough’s Dragon Boat Festival, which has raised more than $4.9 million for cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment at Peterborough Regional Health Centre.
PTBOTODAY.ca spoke with Chair Janice James.
Petes general manager and vice-president of operations Michael Oke said the organization is proud to continue the tradition while partnering with a local group that has made a lasting impact in the community. Captain Carson Cameron said the campaign highlights how hockey can be used to support important causes beyond the ice.
Director, Merchandise & Community Growth, Mark Million, says this is an event everyone looks forward to all season long.
The Pink in the Rink campaign will feature several fundraising initiatives, including a pass-the-bucket, an in-person silent auction during the game, and a post-game on-ice auction of game-worn jerseys. The team says the jersey design will be revealed in the coming weeks.
New this year, fans can purchase space on rink boards to display the names of loved ones affected by cancer, as well as submit names and photos to be shown on the video board during the game.
A limited number of tickets for the Feb. 7 game are now available through the Memorial Centre box office.
