Northumberland Hills Hospital is celebrating the arrival of its first baby of the new year.
Baby Emma was born to Hayley Boivin and Nate Hladysh of Port Hope at 12:02 a.m. on New Year’s Day. She weighed six pounds, seven ounces — or 2,920 grams — and measured 19 inches, or 49 centimetres, long. She is the couple’s first child.
Hayley said the family suspected Emma might arrive earlier, but as the day went on, it became clear she could be a New Year baby.
“She just made it into the new year,” Boivin said in a statement. “We are excited, happy, and a bit overwhelmed.”
She also expressed gratitude to the medical team involved in the delivery, thanking Dr. Awad, Dr. Smith, anesthetist Dr. Radonich, and nurses Alyssa, Tori and Kristen for their care.
As part of a long-standing hospital tradition, Emma will go home with a gift basket prepared and donated by Northumberland Hills Hospital staff and volunteers. Members of the Maternal and Child Care team selected items they believed new parents would find helpful and meaningful. The basket was supported by the hospital, the NHH Foundation and the NHH Auxiliary.
“What a lovely surprise,” Boivin said. “We are overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness.”
The hospital says its Maternal and Child Care team supported more than 500 births during the last fiscal year, working in partnership with local obstetricians, family physicians, anesthesiologists and area midwives.
The unit features six private labour and delivery suites, a dedicated Caesarean-section operating room and advanced fetal and patient monitoring equipment. Beginning in January 2026, the hospital will also offer a Newborn, Perinatal and Reproductive Care Clinic, providing non-urgent ambulatory services to support women’s wellness and newborn health before and after birth across Northumberland County.
Further details about the new clinic are expected to be shared in the coming weeks.
