Working smarter, aided by investments in new technology, saw the Peterborough Police Service move forward during its 175th year of operation – a milestone that was marked in May at the site of the future new police facility on Lansdowne Street West.
Chief Stuart Betts, who’s nearing two years at the helm of the service, says investing in new technology has been, and remains, a priority. That has included the installation of CCTV cameras with licence plate recognition on routes in and out of the city to assist investigations.
In addition, Chief Betts says the continuation of, and improvements to, a no-tolerance approach to open-air illicit drug use is paying dividends.
Chief Betts says being mandated to provided effective policing continues to be a challenge in terms of the police budget, which accounts for about one-fifth of Peterborough’s total tax spending.
When it comes to crime, and his service’s efforts to curb and combat it, Chief Betts worries perceptions don’t always match the reality.
