Peterborough native and Team Canada captain Porter Martone had his biggest game of the tournament last night at the World Junior Hockey Championship in Minnesota, scoring two goals and adding an assist. His three points give him a total of three goals and one assist so far, ranking him 13th among the tournament’s scoring leaders.
Canada jumped out early in the first period, with Gavin McKenna opening the scoring on the power play just over three minutes in, followed by Braeden Cootes and Zayne Parekh before the period ended.
Denmark managed to respond with an early second-period goal from Mads Klyvo, but Canada quickly regained control. Martone struck on a power play at 6:21 of the second period, assisted by Zayne Parekh and Michael Misa, giving Canada a commanding lead.
The Canadian offence didn’t slow down, with McKenna scoring twice more in the second and third periods, while Michael Misa, Kashawn Aitcheson, and Martone added late goals to seal the win.
Canada will look to close out the preliminary round undefeated when they take on Finland tomorrow night in a showdown for first place in Group B.
