Lower Trent Conservation has issued a Water Safety Statement for local creeks and Lake Ontario, valid until 12:00 pm on Friday, January 2. The statement warns of potential dangers from high water levels, unsafe banks, and strong currents for recreational users, children, pets, and waterfront property owners.
A low-pressure system is expected to bring 25–45 mm of precipitation, possibly including thunderstorms, rain, freezing rain, and snow. This could lead to icy conditions, increased water flows, and localized flooding in low-lying areas.
Strong southwest winds of 60–70 km/h are forecast to hit Lake Ontario Monday, shifting northwest by evening, creating waves over 1.5 metres and potential storm surge along the north shore. Residents are advised to secure boats, docks, and other shoreline property.
Parents and caregivers are warned to keep children and pets away from waterways, and to avoid areas near dams, culverts, and bridges. Ice remaining on rivers and lakes is considered unsafe.
Daily water level updates are available at LTC.on.ca, and concerns can be directed to Lower Trent Conservation at (613) 394-4829 or Parks Canada for the Trent River at (705) 750-4950.
