Peterborough Mayor Jeff Leal is condemning a terrorist attack in Australia that targeted a Hanukkah celebration, calling it a reminder that hatred has no place in any community.
In a statement issued Sunday, Leal said the City stands with the Jewish community in Peterborough, across Ontario, and throughout Canada following what he described as a horrific antisemitic attack during a Hanukkah event overseas.
Leal said there is zero tolerance for hate against any group and stressed that members of the Jewish community should feel safe celebrating their faith without fear or intimidation.
The attack in Australia took place during a Hanukkah gathering and has been described by authorities there as a targeted act of antisemitic violence. Multiple people were injured, and the incident has prompted increased security around Jewish institutions in several countries.
In the statement, Leal went on to thank the Peterborough Police Service for increasing its presence at Beth Israel Synagogue as a precautionary measure.
He said the additional police presence is meant to reassure community members and ensure they can continue their celebrations in peace and safety.
The Mayor’s Office says the City will continue to stand against hate and support affected communities during the holiday season.
