The Ontario Provincial Police is urging people to use extreme caution around bodies of water as winter conditions set in.
Police say early-season ice is often thin and unpredictable, creating a high risk of breaking through and ending up in cold water. The OPP notes that the danger extends to snowmobilers and anyone using motorized recreational vehicles on frozen lakes and waterways.
Officers are reminding people to stay on designated trails, avoid unfamiliar areas, check weather and trail conditions, wear proper clothing, and avoid travelling alone. They also advise carrying safety equipment such as ice picks and a throw rope, keeping phones charged, and not using alcohol or drugs while operating snowmobiles or other vehicles.
Police say anyone who sees a person fall through the ice should call 911 immediately, as rescue attempts without proper equipment can put others at risk. For non-emergency matters, the OPP can be reached at 1-888-310-1122.
