Peterborough’s Salvation Army has issued an urgent call for donations of knitted or purchased socks and mittens.
Longtime Salvation Army Christmas support worker JoAnne Leach says while toque donations have been plentiful, there is a huge need for socks and mittens as the colder weather dawns.
Leach says the Army’s Christmas Assistance Program has been in place since 1974. Traditionally, parents who come to choose gifts for their children also receive knitted mittens, socks, a toque and/or a scarf for each child. But, she adds, the assistance doesn’t stop there.
Not surprisingly, Leach says the Salvation Army is seeing an increase in the need.
Leach says while it’s distressing to see so many people in need of the basics, she says her spirits are buoyed by continued support of the community.
Donations can be brought to the Salvation Army at 219 Simcoe Street.
