Peterborough finance co-chair say the diversion of casino money to cover operational costs a tax-lowering option
With Peterborough’s projected all-inclusive 2026 tax increase now sitting at 7.92 percent, city council’s finance co-chair says bringing that number down will require some tough decisions.
Along with his council colleagues, Dave Haacke will begin the process of going through the draft budget line-by-line starting Monday and on through Tuesday. It’s expected the budget will be presented for adoption on December 8th.
Noting he’s not happy with the proposed increase, Councillor Haacke says designating money the city receives for hosting the casino to cover operational costs as opposed to capital costs is an option.
Councillor Haacke says going through the proposed budget line by line is tedious but necessary if savings are to be found.
Councillor Haacke says Ontario municipalities have banded to press the provincial government for an easing of downloaded costs.
