Petes defenceman Thanasi Marentette is turning his time on the ice into a chance to give back to the community with a new initiative starting tonight (November 13) at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
Called Marentette’s Mission, the program collects winter clothing and essential items for underprivileged individuals and families in Peterborough. Fans attending Thursday night home games through December 11 are encouraged to donate new jackets, snow pants, boots, blankets, hats, gloves, scarves, socks, and other winter gear. Collection bins will be set up in the main lobby of the Memorial Centre, and donations can also be dropped off at the Petes Store during regular business hours.
Marentette said he was inspired by his journey through competitive hockey. “Peterborough’s become a second home to me over my three years here and I’m very happy to be able to use my platform to be able to donate back,” he said. “I want to thank Petes fans for their support and encourage everyone to donate if they can.”
The program supports Street Level Advocacy and the Kawartha Haliburton Children’s Foundation. As an added incentive, the first 100 donations at each night’s game will receive a 5” x 7” glossy print or a collector’s card, both signed by Marentette.
The first collection drive will take place tonight when they Petes host the Sarnia Sting. If you can’t make it down to the game, you can listen to Peterborough Kia Petes Hockey on Freq 90.5, with coverage getting underway just before 7pm.
