The City of Peterborough has announced the full reopening of Brealey Drive to motorists and pedestrians, marking the completion of a major two-phase reconstruction project that modernizes key infrastructure and enhances safety for all road users.
The $20.7-million project, awarded to Behan Construction Limited, began in spring 2024 and wrapped up in October 2025 — on time and within budget. Work included new storm and sanitary sewers, watermains, street lighting, curbs, and a sidewalk on the east side of the roadway.
“This project represents an important investment in the long-term sustainability, safety, and accessibility of our transportation network,” said Ward 2 Councillor Don Vassiliadis, highlighting the project’s role in supporting future growth and active transportation.
Councillor Matt Crowley praised staff and residents for their patience, noting the project had been delayed since its original 2018 target. “This is a project the community demanded, and together with our staff, we delivered,” he said.
Key upgrades include an off-street multi-use trail, on-street cycling lanes, and new traffic signals at Cherryhill Road, Kawartha Heights Boulevard, and Hewitt Drive, featuring enhanced crossings and turning lanes. The project also added stormwater management facilities, tree planting, and landscaping to support a more resilient transportation corridor.
City officials say the completion of the Brealey Drive reconstruction underscores Peterborough’s commitment to building safe, sustainable, and connected infrastructure for residents.
