The Selwyn Fire Department is marking Fire Prevention Week, running October 5-11, with a focus on the safe use of lithium-ion batteries in homes.
This year’s campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” reminds residents that while these batteries power devices from cell phones and laptops to e-bikes and scooters, they can pose fire risks if misused.
Fire Prevention Officer Andrew Bowyer advises residents to follow three key steps: buy safely by choosing devices and batteries from reputable sources; charge safely using approved equipment and instructions; and recycle safely by taking old or damaged batteries to proper recycling facilities. Household batteries can be dropped off year-round at the Selwyn Township Municipal Office, all three Selwyn Public Library branches, and the Smith Landfill Site.
“Lithium-ion batteries are part of our everyday lives, but when handled improperly, they can be dangerous,” said Bowyer. “By learning how to buy, charge, and recycle safely, we can help prevent fires and keep our community safe.”
