Fleming College students could face disruptions starting Thursday as full-time support staff across Ontario’s 24 public colleges begin a strike. The Ontario Public Service Employees’ Union (OPSEU) says more than 10,000 workers, including librarian technicians, registrar employees, and technology support staff, are walking off the job over concerns about funding and job security.
Fleming’s Student Administrative Council (SAC) says it is ready to help students navigate the uncertainty. SAC will remain open during the labour disruption and continue to provide services, advocacy, and events wherever possible, with adjustments as needed.
“We recognize this is a stressful and uncertain time for students,” said Charan Pitla, SAC Board Chair. “Our commitment is to provide clear information and advocate for student needs so they feel supported no matter how this situation unfolds.”
SAC will keep students informed through email, its website FlemingSAC.ca, and social media channels. Students can also get guidance on their rights, respectful interactions with picket lines, and support if the strike creates barriers to attending classes or campus activities.
The strike follows months of negotiations between OPSEU and the College Employer Council, which represents Ontario’s public colleges. The union says job security and program funding are major concerns, noting that past and projected cuts could result in thousands of layoffs and hundreds of program cancellations across the province.
Fleming students are being advised to check SAC communications regularly for updates and resources while the strike is ongoing.
