What began in 1825 as a small market square in Scott’s Plains, organized by Peter Robinson to serve newly arrived Irish settlers, has grown into one of the oldest continuously operating farmers’ markets in Canada. This year, the Peterborough Farmers’ Market celebrates its 200th anniversary.
Originally held downtown, the market moved in 1950 to Morrow Park fairground after the city repurposed Market Hall. The Morrow family gifted the fairground, creating a new home for generations of local farmers and artisans.
Speaking at the event, board president Anna Lewis said the milestone is a testament to the people behind the market.
More than 1,400 people RSVP’d for the anniversary celebration, where visitors received free rewards and a limited-edition “200 years” reusable market bag.
Lewis also gave a heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out to support the market.
