A three-day celebration more than a year in the making will commemorate the 200th anniversary of Douro’s founding by Irish emigrants.
From July 4th to 7th, a number of events are planned, the aim being to connect Douro community members, both near and far, with their past and present, and to educate future generations.
Organizing committee chair Patrick Leahy says the celebration provides the opportunity to reflect on, and honour, the many contributions of those who paved the way for what Douro has become.
Of note, says Leahy, is a number of people with Douro ties who live abroad are returning for the anniversary celebration.
Along with guided cemetery and village tours, family displays, kids’ activities, a concert and dance featuring the Leahy Family and Friends, and a memorial mass at St. Joseph’s Church, Leahy says a special tribute will be unveiled.
