Peterborough Police are warning residents after two recent fraud cases that cost victims a combined $25,000.
In both incidents, which occurred over the past three weeks, the victims were contacted by someone claiming to be from Microsoft or Bell Canada. The scammers told them hackers were trying to access their computer or bank accounts and pressured them to withdraw money immediately to help stop the alleged breach.
An “agent” was then sent to the victims’ homes to collect the cash.
The man who picked up the money in both cases is described as Asian, between 20 and 30 years old, around 5’6 to 5’7 tall, with dark hair. He was clean-cut and well-dressed.
Police urge anyone with information to call 705-876-1122 x555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
