There is no doubt life for Emma Harrison has changed dramatically over the last few months and it’s a sure bet that rollercoaster will continue in the months and even years ahead.
Harrison stepped forward and won the Liberal nomination in Peterborough in March and by the end of April, was the MP-elect for the riding.
The third-generation farmer and small business owner stopped by the PTBOTODAY.ca studio for a sit down conversation and says part of her strategy all along was simply to be as genuine as possible.
Area voters bought into giving the first-time political candidate a chance on Parliament Hill, as Harrison received over 42,000 votes to unseat Conservative incumbent Michelle Ferreri in the April 28th federal election. Harrison says the hard work is really about to begin and has a couple of priorities to start her term – including issues around housing.
Tensions with the United States and President Donald Trump made headlines during the campaign and Harrison says without a doubt, Prime Minister Mark Carney is the best person to protect Canadian interests.
Away from politics and business, Harrison was a high-profile athlete. She attended Lakefield District Secondary School where her love of sport grew into a passion. Joining Kawartha Lacrosse in 1999, Harrison went on to play for Team Canada at the Women’s Field Lacrosse World Cup in 2003, bringing home the bronze medal, as well as Player of the Match three times.
Harrison will be in Ottawa when King Charles visits later this month to deliver the speech from the throne, a detail confirmed by Prime Minister Carney on Friday. Parliament will be recalled on May 26th.
