Peterborough Square will transform into a bustling hub of community spirit next week as Volunteer Peterborough hosts its second annual Meet Your Match Volunteer Fair on Wednesday, May 7, from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. No registration or resume is required for volunteers; just show up, explore, and start conversations.
Following last year’s overwhelming success, the event promises to connect passionate locals with over 40 non-profit organizations, offering opportunities ranging from animal welfare to senior care, environmental initiatives to arts and entertainment. With free entry for volunteers and a welcoming atmosphere, the fair is set to spark meaningful connections that strengthen the community.
According to Lois Tuffin, Founder and Chair of Volunteer Peterborough, the fair’s unique format makes it easy for anyone to find their perfect volunteer role. Tuffin describes it like speed dating for volunteering, highlighting the event’s casual, exploratory vibe.
Last year’s inaugural fair drew a diverse crowd, from high school students earning community service hours to seniors and working professionals seeking purpose-driven activities. The event sold out its booths, with organizations reporting full sign-up sheets and enthusiastic follow-ups from skilled volunteers. Tuffin says the fair brought out people with exactly the skills organizations needed, filling critical gaps for local organizations.
The idea for the fair grew out of Volunteer Peterborough’s online portal, which matches volunteers with opportunities much like a job board or dating app. While the website has connected over 1,400 volunteers with 160 organizations, Tuffin says many people craved face-to-face interaction and the in-person fair was a natural next step.
This year’s fair will feature dozens of booths, workshops, and panels, allowing attendees to explore diverse causes and learn from community leaders. From driving injured turtles to rehabilitation centres to tending gardens for the Humane Society, the opportunities are as varied as Peterborough’s residents. Tuffin encourages attendees to come with an open mind, ready to explore all possibilities.
The fair isn’t just about filling volunteer roles; it’s about fostering connections that enrich lives. Volunteers last year reported feeling more connected and purposeful, while organizations gained dedicated supporters. With plans to make the event an annual tradition, Tuffin ensures that Volunteer Peterborough is committed to sustaining this momentum.
As Peterborough’s community spirit shines, the Meet Your Match Volunteer Fair is poised to create lasting impacts, one connection at a time.
