The Peterborough Theatre Guild will introduce its audiences to a little known but history-making woman when it stages the fourth play of its current season.
Opening March 21st at The Guild Hall on Rogers Street, Silent Sky relates the story of Henrietta Leavitt, one of a group of women ‘computers’ who worked at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s. The story explores a women’s place in society when their ideas and discoveries were dismissed while men took the credit.
Director Bea Quarrie admits she hadn’t heard of Laura Gunderson’s true story until a friend suggested she give it a read.
Quarrie says Lindsay Unterlander, who plays Leavitt, possesses her spirit, making her a perfect choice for the role.
An actor and director with the guild since 1971, Quarrie’s says her love of theatre is rooted in it being ‘an art form that continues to puzzle and challenge.’
Eleven performances of Silent Sky are scheduled. For tickets, visit www.peterboroughtheatreguild.com.
