The Peterborough Lakers are set to ignite their season with a showdown against their biggest rivals.
The team held a press conference at Kawartha TV and Stereo yesterday to announce that their home opener will take place on May 22nd at 8 pm at the Peterborough Memorial Centre, where they’ll face the two-time defending Mann Cup champion Six Nations Chiefs.
Several members of the Lakers board were on hand for the announcement, including Len Powers, John D’Altoe, President Ted Higgins, and star player Colton Armstrong.
Lakers Director of Community Engagement and Partnerships, Pete Dalliday, says that with season tickets now on sale, they wanted to start getting fans excited about the upcoming season and felt this announcement was the perfect way to build anticipation.
Along with the game announcement, a new partnership with Kawartha TV and Stereo was unveiled, which will include a major promotional giveaway running throughout the season and feature Lakers promos displayed on their big 10-foot by 5-foot video wall at the “Bargain Corner” at the intersection of Park and Lansdowne.
The giveaway will begin at the home opener and run until the end of the regular season, with one lucky winner taking home a grand prize that includes a 70-inch Samsung 4K Smart TV, a Samsung premium soundbar with subwoofer, Lakers playoff tickets, and exclusive Lakers swag.
Store Manager at Kawartha TV and Stereo, Shaun Williams, emphasized the importance of local businesses supporting the community.
The fierce rivalry between the Lakers and Chiefs is undeniable, having faced off in nine of the last eleven Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) finals.
Dalliday says playing the Chiefs in the season opener will allow them to set the tone for fans right off the bat.
For over a decade, the Lakers and Chiefs have dominated the summer lacrosse scene, each winning five of the last 11 Mann Cup titles. Since 2012, only one other team has been able to break their reign: the Western Lacrosse Association’s Victoria Shamrocks in 2015, when they became the first non-MSL team to win the Cup since 2005
With both teams hungry for another championship, fans can expect an action-packed opener to kick off the season.
