The City of Peterborough has declared a Significant Weather Event ahead of a major winter storm expected to bring blizzard conditions and heavy snowfall from Wednesday evening through Thursday.
John Czerniawski, Manager of Public Works Operations, said the declaration is meant to alert residents that snow clearing and road treatments may take longer than usual due to the severity of the storm.
Environment Canada forecasts between 15 and 30 centimetres of snowfall overnight, with peak accumulation rates of up to four centimetres per hour, accompanied by high winds. Crews are also monitoring a second winter storm system expected to arrive this weekend.
The City is prepared to deploy its full fleet, including 18 plow trucks, 11 sidewalk plows, and additional equipment, with winter abrasives and de-icers stocked. Crews will prioritize arterial and collector roads before addressing residential streets, sidewalks, and trails. The operation covers 978 kilometres of roads, 450 kilometres of sidewalks, and 39 kilometres of trails, with snow removal following in key locations once clearing is complete.
Residents are urged to use caution when traveling, as visibility may be reduced. Motorists should avoid unnecessary travel, drive slowly, and be prepared to stop. Pedestrians and drivers are also asked to give crews space to work safely.
Peterborough Transit may adjust service based on conditions, including the use of designated snow routes. Winter parking restrictions remain in effect, prohibiting street parking between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Free overnight parking is available in municipal garages and surface lots during the storm, with transit passes provided for those using parking garages.
