As part of a national initiative to assess homelessness across Canada, United Way Peterborough & District will conduct a Point-in-Time (PiT) Count of homelessness next week.
The PiT Count will include a 24-hour enumeration, where outreach workers on foot and by bike will count individuals visibly experiencing homelessness across the city. This provides a snapshot of the minimum number of people experiencing homelessness, recognizing that certain types, like hidden homelessness (e.g., couch surfing), may not be captured.
In addition, a detailed survey will gather information on demographics, health, and the causes and duration of homelessness. These surveys will be conducted in shelters and designated community locations on November 18th, 20th, and 21st. Those participating will receive goods in appreciation, and all surveyors will carry identification confirming their role in the PiT Count.
This is the fourth such count in Peterborough, following previous counts in 2021, 2018, and 2016. United Way anticipates that the 2024 findings will show an increase in homelessness in the region, which could highlight the need for more resources dedicated to housing services.
