The Ontario Provincial Police is reminding everyone to make safety a priority this Halloween as children take to the streets in search of treats. With excitement running high, kids can sometimes dart unexpectedly into traffic, posing a risk to themselves and to drivers who may be caught off guard. The OPP is stressing the need for safety this Halloween as kids will flood the streets knocking on doors and sometimes darting out into traffic.
OPP spokesperson Bill Dickson says drivers need to remain alert, as kids can be unpredictable on the road.
Dickson adds that drivers need to keep in mind kids can appear out of anywhere.
The OPP has specific tips for parents, drivers, and kids to make Halloween night safe for all:
- For Drivers: Be vigilant and slow down, especially in neighbourhoods where kids might be crossing the street. Stay focused and avoid distractions.
- For Parents: Choose makeup over masks when possible, as masks can block a child’s vision. If you’re driving between neighbourhoods, ensure everyone buckles up. Young children should always be supervised, and it’s best not to let them trick-or-treat alone.
- For Kids: Have fun but stay safe by following a few simple rules. Always trick-or-treat with an adult or in a group, tell your parents your route, carry a flashlight, and wear reflective clothing. Stick to sidewalks or the edge of the road and cross streets only at crosswalks or intersections. Avoid going into strangers’ homes and have an adult inspect your treats before you eat them.
Dickson says if you’re thinking of letting your young child go trick or treating alone, think again.
He adds that while teens are usually alright to trick-or-treat in groups, parents should know their route and expected return time.
