On December 14th, Del Mastro Recreation will mark a major milestone, celebrating 30 years since it initially opened as a pre-owned vehicle dealership.
Much has happened since, with the family business having long since transitioned to the recreational vehicle side of things, also adding Del Mastro Auto Spa, Cameron Cycle and Horseshoe Bay Marina to the mix.
Yvonne Del Mastro, the family matriarch, founded the business in 1994, joined by her four sons – Doug, Michael, Dean and Jason. Dean returned to the fold after 15 years away – he served as the local Member of Parliament for nine of those years – and oversaw a major expansion of the family business.
Reflecting on the diversification of the business, Dean says while things initially stayed true to his father’s vehicle dealership roots, the family eventually turned its fuller attention to “the things that we love.”
Being in business as a family, says Dean, has it challenges but isn’t without its perks.
Noting that this year was particularly challenging for all small businesses, Dean says “we had to work that much harder” to succeed.
When all is said and done, Dean says interacting with people – sometimes he’s always loved to do – is what still excites him to go to work.
