With Monday being the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a local Indigenous leader says slow progress on the 94 calls to action issued by the Truth and Reconciliation Committee is cause for concern.
Hiawatha First Nation Chief Laurie Carr says just 11 of those calls to action have been completed, with others stalled and still others not started on.
Chief Carr says Ottawa needs to hear from all Canadians that the work done to date on the commission’s calls to action simply isn’t good enough.
Chief Carr acknowledges that Canadians’ growing awareness of the injustices done to residential schoolchildren is a vital step toward real truth and reconciliation, it’s a stepping stone toward meaningful action. She adds keeping today’s children front of mind is key to ensuring tragic history of the past doesn’t repeat itself.
An event and dinner in remembrance of those children lost and those who survived will be held tonight at Hiawartha First Nation.
