All licensed convenience stores in Ontario, including in Peterborough, are now allowed to sell beer, wine, cider, and ready-to-drink beverages.
As of today, close to 4,200 convenience stores have joined nearly 3,000 other licensed retail outlets in offering a wider selection of alcoholic drinks.
The Ontario government says the change, which marks the most significant shift in alcohol sales since the end of prohibition nearly a century ago, aims to enhance convenience for Ontarians and support local producers.
By the end of October, eligible convenience, grocery, and big-box stores across Ontario will also be able to offer these same alcoholic drinks if they want to.
The new regulations also include measures to support local wineries and breweries by requiring that at least 20 percent of displayed beverages come from craft producers.
Additionally, licensed grocery and convenience stores can now display alcoholic beverages in different sections of their stores, while still meeting small-producer shelf space requirements and following rules to ensure the responsible sale of alcohol.
