Peterborough City Council has declined to endorse a Temporary Use By-law that would have permitted the establishment of a sleeping cabin community at 385 Lansdowne Street East.
The proposal, put forth by Peterborough Action for Tiny Homes (PATH), sought to create up to 24 one-room sleeping cabins on the property for a period of up to three years.
The property, located at the southwest corner of Lansdowne Street East and Consumers Place, was previously occupied by the Peterborough Humane Society. It is currently owned by Habitat for Humanity Peterborough and Kawartha Region, which has leased the site to PATH. Although Habitat for Humanity intends to explore a permanent housing solution for the site in the future, that proposal is still years away from being finalized.
PATH, a local non-profit organization focused on providing housing for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness, applied for the Temporary Use By-law as a stopgap measure to address immediate housing needs. The organization advocates for transitional housing and the use of non-traditional housing forms to increase availability and affordability.
