Ontarians are gearing up to celebrate Canada Day with a special invitation from the provincial government: free fishing across Ontario from June 29 to July 7. This initiative aims to honour the province’s rich angling heritage while encouraging residents and visitors alike to embrace the outdoors.
Minister of Natural Resources, Graydon Smith, expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, “I welcome anyone curious about fishing to experience the excitement and satisfaction of this great sport firsthand”. “Wherever you are in Ontario – urban or rural – there are abundant opportunities to enjoy free fishing in celebration of Canada Day”.
Families are encouraged to explore local events and fishing opportunities, accessible through Ontario’s official family fishing website. During the free fishing period, participants are reminded to adhere to conservation limits and carry valid identification showing name and date of birth.
Notably, this marks the final free fishing period of 2024 for Canadian residents in Ontario. Regular fishing licences are available for purchase online through huntandfishontario.com or in person at designated ServiceOntario locations.
Ontario boasts over one million licensed anglers annually, contributing significantly to the province’s recreational fishing industry, which generates approximately $1.75 billion each year.
