Peterborough’s new Community Health Centre has secured a temporary location.
With the plan to open as early as this September, a one-year lease for former TD Bank location at Peterborough Square has been secured. Moving forward, the focus will on attracting doctors, nurses and other health care staff to serve the marginalized who don’t have access to a family doctor.
Jonathan Bennett, chair of the board overseeing the non-profit initiative, says things have progressed quickly since the provincial government announced in February it will provide annual funding of $4.8 million for the centre’s operation.
The goal, says Bennett, is serve those in need of health care as soon as possible.
For a region that has been chronically underserved in terms of doctor accessibility, Bennett says the new centre provides “a ray of hope.” He adds the centre’s economic model differs from that of a Family Health Team – something that will attract doctors.
