The 36th annual Laker Classic lacrosse tournament is set to take place this weekend in Peterborough, promising an action-packed weekend that will bring significant economic benefits to the local community. The tournament, which is hosted by the Peterborough Minor Lacrosse Association (PMLA), features 40 teams across five divisions, ranging from U9 to U17, with participants traveling from various regions including London, Cornwall, and Nepean.
The tournament’s kickoff will be marked by local team matches starting Friday at 3pm at the Memorial Center, with events continuing throughout the weekend. Attendees are encouraged to follow the PMLA’s social media for updates on game schedules, particularly as teams advance to semi-finals and finals. Games will be hosted across five arenas: Kinsmen, Healthy Planet, Memorial Center, Ennismore, and Lakefield.
Normally, the tournament is reserved for A/B teams, but PMLA President John Pacey says this year they’ve been able to add a new division for the U9s, which will allow for more teams to compete.
In a show of community support, the Jr. A Lakers will offer free entry to their season opener against Six Nations, at 8pm on Friday, to any Laker Classic participant wearing their team jersey. Additionally, the Senior Lakers will hold an open practice from 2:30 to 4pm on Saturday.
Pacey says the support from both teams reinforces the strong ties within Peterborough’s lacrosse community.
The influx of visitors is expected to boost the local economy, with hotels and restaurants anticipating increased business. Pacey says the PMLA has enjoyed longstanding support from local hotels, ensuring accommodations for the visiting teams each year.
The Laker Classic not only provides thrilling lacrosse action but also serves as a cherished tradition for local players and fans, marking the unofficial start of the summer lacrosse season in Peterborough.
A full schedule for the weekend can be found on the PMLA website.
